Down to Earth

I started college as a freshman at Georgia Gwinnett College in fall of 2008. At the beginning of October 2008, Miles came to our campus to speak for Origin, one of the clubs on campus. It is dedicated to service in the community. As Miles spoke he mentioned being a pastor at a church nearby, and I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, this guy is so down to Earth.” Miles mentioned a time people were going to meet and have discussion. I figured I would go because it sounded interesting. I didn’t know many people on campus and I figured this would be a good way to meet more.

I showed up to the discussion, which proved to be very thought provoking, and afterwards Miles asked me if I ever attended church. At that point in my life, I was very busy working on the weekends so I didn’t have time to go to the church I had always been to, but I was definitely interested in getting involved again. Luckily the college ministry at 12Stone met on Thursday nights then so it was easy for me to show up. Miles told me that there were normally about 300 college age people who showed up each week. This idea was a little overwhelming, but I was open to at least trying it once. I decided to go the first week Miles told me about Water’s Edge and I was shocked. I was surprised to see so many of my peers so engaged with praising God and Miles gave a great message.

I began attending Water’s Edge regularly from that point on. In February 2009, I joined a small group and started serving in the office before Water’s Edge. My whole freshman year was a time of a lot of personal growth with God. During the summer, I was employed at a Boy Scout High Adventure camp in New Mexico, which is known by many as “God’s country.” The whole summer I had time to really get to know myself and become closer with God. I arrived home from my summer out West on August 19th, and during the open baptisms at the 1 o’clock service at 12Stone on August 30th I committed to give my life to Jesus Christ.

My life has never been so hectic and crazy before, but I constantly remember that God is on my side. I know that God provides and ever since I surrendered to him my life has been amazingly peaceful.
