Heroes and Heroines

The literal meaning is “protector” or “defender”. When we hear the word something comes alive in us. It is so much more than a movie character. Heroes existed thousands of years ago in history but they also exist today. Often times a thought that occurs in peoples brains is that a hero is someone that we could never live up to, that we could applaud them without a problem but to be one is nearly impossible.

There is an Old Testament prophecy that caught my attention a few days ago, it spoke about the hero to come.

When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them.

Isaiah 19:20

A problem was in the world, and God fixed it. I think there is an example in that for us to live by. In fact, we saw the disciples of Christ becoming heroes to the world around them, they were inspired. There are people today in bondage, in chains, slaved by oppressors. We see heroes pulling Haitian children out of rubble, we see heroines adopting orphans. What about us though? What about the oppressed in our communities? Who will stand for them? Who will fight? Who will be their freedom?

There is an opportunity to become a hero or heroine this Monday, February 1st. The sexual exploitation of children is a worldwide problem but also a local one. 350 children are being trafficked for sex against their will every month in Atlanta. By joining us this Monday in Atlanta you could be a modern day abolitionist, we can protect these children. You can be a hero every day in your community by simply looking at the needs of your neighbors. In fact, that is step 1- we should be doing that. In a few days, we have a way to leave a mark in a larger scale. Consider this my invitation to you.

See you Monday morning.
